Plaid, Dressed Up: The Season's Most Sophisticated Check

Forget the pumpkin patch. This autumn, tartan and check moved into chiffon, silk and evening — and looked better than ever.

Plaid arrives every autumn, as dependable as falling leaves. What made fall/winter 2026 different was where it went. The check was lifted out of the country and into the drawing room — rendered in chiffon and silk, cut into tea dresses and evening bags, and styled with real polish.

On the runway

Coveteur called plaid, tartan and checkerboard arguably one of the biggest stories of the season. At Chloé, Chemena Kamali filled her collection with check, from button-down shirts to translucent, shirred tea dresses. Acne Studios layered different check prints together into looks that were busy yet cohesive. And at Burberry — where no conversation about tartan is complete — Daniel Lee showed tartan coats trimmed with fur in navy and garnet, in a collection that leaned towards evening.

Harper's Bazaar made the same point from another angle: this was plaid that was chic and dressed up, often in brighter colourways than the usual autumnal browns, appearing at Chanel, Dries Van Noten, Celine and Tory Burch as well as Chloé. Even the more rebellious end of the spectrum was represented; Trendalytics noted the grunge-leaning plaids that opened the New York shows.

The new rules of check

  • Change the fabric. The single biggest update is material. A plaid in silk chiffon or fine wool crêpe feels entirely different from a heavy flannel shirt.
  • Pair it with something sleek. A fitted black knit, a sharp blazer or a pair of polished knee-high boots keeps plaid grown-up.
  • Try it for evening. A check dress or skirt with satin, velvet or a statement earring is one of the season's most unexpected — and most charming — evening looks.
  • Clash with intent. If you love the Acne Studios approach, mix two checks of similar colour but different scale. One bold, one fine.

The takeaway

Plaid is a perennial, which makes this a trend you can invest in without hesitation. A beautifully made check skirt or coat will reappear every autumn; this season simply showed us how elegant it can be.
