Pearls, Reconsidered: Bigger, Bolder and Never Prim
From gumdrop chokers to larger-than-life strands and tinted mother-of-pearl, the classic gem has shed its twinset reputation.

Few pieces of jewellery carry as much baggage as pearls. For generations they signalled propriety — a single strand with a twinset, worn for the occasions that called for being good. The autumn/winter 2026 collections set out to change that.
On the runway
Vogue's accessory report described pearls appearing in every shape and size this season, from layered pendants to gumdrop-sized chokers, styled in both minimal and maximal ways. Elle highlighted Valentino, where larger-than-life pearl strands gave looks an unexpected edge.
At Chanel, the house's own collection notes describe an opalescent set of colour-saturated enamel and resin jewellery alongside artificially tinted genuine mother-of-pearl — a play between the real and the artificial that ran through the whole show. It is a telling detail: even the most classic of materials is being treated with a sense of experiment.
Ways to make pearls modern
- Go oversized. Large, lustrous pearls read as bold and graphic rather than demure. One big strand is more current than several small ones.
- Embrace irregularity. Baroque pearls, with their organic, uneven shapes, feel artistic and individual — every strand is different.
- Wear them close. A pearl choker at the base of the neck, over a sweater or with an open collar, is one of the season's freshest shapes.
- Mix with metal. Pearls threaded with gold beads or paired with a bold gold cuff look warmer and less formal.
- Contrast the clothes. Pearls with a leather jacket, a sharp tuxedo or a chunky knit undercut their prim associations beautifully.
The takeaway
Pearls have endured because they suit almost everyone. This season simply reminds us they can be playful, even a little irreverent — and that a strand from the back of the jewellery box may be the most current thing you own.
