Waist Theory: Cummerbunds, Buckles and the New Dropped Waist

Fall 2026 moved the focus to the middle of the body — with sashes, oversized buckles and waistlines lower than we have seen in years.

Where a garment meets the body at the waist has always defined its era. This season, designers returned to the subject with unusual enthusiasm — and offered several very different answers.

The cummerbund returns

The cummerbund has spent most of its life as an accessory of black-tie menswear. For fall 2026 it became, in Harper's Bazaar's words, a hero accessory of the season — most notably at Dries Van Noten, where Julian Klausner revived the house's long fascination with the waist through statement cummerbunds. Worn over shirts, knits and dresses, a wide satin band instantly lends a look structure and a hint of evening.

Buckles as jewellery

Elle noted that belts, cummerbunds and other waist-defining pieces were having a moment like no other, often arriving with oversized buckles that stole the spotlight. Ralph Lauren and Chloé leaned towards the Western influence that has been building for several seasons, while Dior opted for a luxe medallion. Treat the buckle as you would a brooch or a cuff: it is jewellery for the middle of the body.

Lower and lower

At the same time, the shape of the season moved south. Harper's Bazaar pointed to Simone Rocha, Tory Burch and Chanel's Matthieu Blazy dropping the waistlines of dresses lower than we have seen in a long while. It is a silhouette with roots in the 1920s — a decade Vogue noted was referenced by Khaite, Kallmeyer and Conner Ives — and it gives a long, languid line that feels both romantic and relaxed.

How to wear it

  • Belt your knitwear. A wide belt or satin sash over a long cardigan or fine-gauge sweater dress is the simplest way in.
  • Make the buckle the statement. If your belt carries a sculptural buckle, keep other jewellery minimal.
  • Try the dropped waist with flat boots. The longer line looks especially modern with a sleek, low-heeled knee boot.
  • Borrow from black tie. A cummerbund over a crisp white shirt and tailored trousers is evening dressing with real wit.

The takeaway

The waist is where a look comes together. Whether you choose a cummerbund, a medallion buckle or a dropped-waist dress, the season's message is the same: give the middle of the body a little ceremony.
